For her doctoral dissertation, she conducted a study of brain development in pre-term infants. Dr. Matthews then completed a Doctoral Respecialization Program in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Matthews has worked in a variety of settings, including the public schools in Richmond, California; San Francisco County community mental health; Kaiser Permanente Department of Child Psychiatry; the V.A. hospital; and the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Matthews has been in private practice in Marin County since 2001. She has been Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF since 2003, where she teaches and supervises child psychiatry residents. Dr. Matthews grew up in San Francisco and Mill Valley. She lives in Marin with her husband of 22 years and their three children.

He provides cognitive behavioral therapy for a range of disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. He began his professional career as a medical and psychiatric social worker. Focusing on the field of geriatric services, he became a manager and administrator of public and private programs. His training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) began in 1993, and continued for several years through advanced and intensive workshops with Christine Padesky, Ph.D. (co-author of the popular Cognitive Therapy workbook Mind Over Mood) and Kathleen Mooney, Ph.D. He developed outpatient and partial hospital cognitive therapy treatment programs for adults at Ross Hospital. Recent years have seen the emergence of treatments within CBT that emphasize mindfulness and other practices for changing the way we relate to our thoughts and feelings. He has received training in two of these treatments: Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and has made them an integral part of his work. Currently, he runs two or three 10-week CBT groups per year. He works with many people who have recurrent or long-standing problems with depression and/or anxiety. His practice serves adults, from young men and women transitioning toward college or careers to people facing the challenges of old age. |
